What the Apprenticeship Gives You
The Black Belt Apprenticeship Program is an exclusive five-year development program for students committed to working toward black belt while learning to teach and lead. Every apprentice trains in a small group with direct access to our coaching staff.
Two Sessions a Week
Apprentices receive two dedicated small-group training sessions each week, separate from regular classes, focused entirely on your technical development.
Instructor Education
You learn how to teach, not just how to train. Structured instructor education covers class design, coaching language, safety, and student progression.
Ongoing Mentorship
You are mentored and evaluated throughout the program, so you always know where you stand and what the next step in your development looks like.

A Five-Year Path From Student to Black Belt
Most students train belt to belt. Apprentices train on a plan. The Black Belt Apprenticeship Program is a five-year development program designed for individuals committed to working toward black belt while learning the skills to become a confident Jiu-Jitsu instructor, coach, and future academy owner.
Apprentices receive two dedicated small-group training sessions each week, structured technical development, instructor education, mentorship, and ongoing evaluations. Every part of the program is built to make you better on the mat and more capable beside it.
You Do Not Have to Wait Until Black Belt to Start Teaching
Teaching is a skill of its own, and it is learned the same way Jiu-Jitsu is: with instruction, repetition, and feedback. As your skills and experience develop, qualified apprentices may begin assisting and teaching classes at Ancaster Jiu-Jitsu.
You start by supporting a coach on the mat, then take on more of the room as you are ready. Every step is supervised, reviewed, and matched to what you have actually earned.
A Realistic Route to Running Your Own Academy
Potentially within the first few years of the program, apprentices who are ready may work toward opening their own Jiu-Jitsu program or an affiliated academy under continued mentorship.
That mentorship does not end when the doors open. The point of the apprenticeship is to build instructors who can carry the standard forward on their own mats, with our support behind them.
Ten Apprentices Per Group, and No Guaranteed Belts
Enrollment is limited to 10 apprentices per group, which is what makes the mentorship real rather than nominal. Small groups mean your coach knows your game, your teaching, and your goals.
Belt promotions, including black belt, are always earned based on individual development and are not guaranteed by completion of the program. The apprenticeship gives you the training, the teaching experience, and the mentorship. What you do with it is still yours to earn.

Five years. It is a long-term development program, not a course, and the structure is built around that timeline: technical development, instructor education, mentorship, and ongoing evaluations throughout.
